Semester at Sea has adjusted the Fall 2025 voyage itinerary, replacing the planned stop in Nantes, France, with a visit to Porto, Portugal. The MV World Odyssey will now arrive in Porto on Monday, September 15, and remain through Thursday, September 18.
This change follows reports of widespread anti-government protests and a planned national strike across France that have disrupted transportation and raised safety concerns. After consulting with the captain, voyage leadership team, and ship management company, the Institute for Shipboard Education (ISE) determined that rerouting the ship would ensure a full and secure port experience for voyagers.
Captain Jan and the crew have set a new course and anticipate a smooth passage to Portugal, with arrival in Porto scheduled for 0800 on September 15.
Porto, one of Europe’s most historic and vibrant cities, invites voyagers to explore its colorful riverside district, centuries-old architecture, and the scenic Douro River valley while enjoying world-renowned cuisine and celebrated port wine cellars. This dynamic destination offers a rich cultural setting for global learning and discovery.
While the change means saying goodbye to France this semester, it reflects the adaptability that defines Semester at Sea. As Dean Lisa reminded the shipboard community,
“Flexibility is part of this journey. The ability to embrace change is a skill voyagers will carry long after the semester ends.”
Classes will continue on board as scheduled until arrival. The Semester at Sea website will be updated in the coming days to reflect this itinerary change.
