About Herb Thompson
Herb Thompson (Geoman) sailed on the Semester at Sea Spring 1987 voyage as a student and the Summer 2004 voyage as a staff member coordinating a graduate program called "Teachers at Sea." He's served as a volunteer on the SAS Alumni Association Leadership team since 2012, including on the Voyagers Council, the Executive Board and as a Regional Chapter Rep. Herb has sailed on so many Seminars at Sea, Enrichment Voyages and Alumni Voyages that he's lost count! He's also prolonged his spring 1987 experience by assisting with embarkation in several locations.
Herb has lived in Las Vegas for 44 years. He's taught both middle school and high school geography there, as well as social studies methods classes at his alma mater, University of Nevada, Las Vegas and Summer Geography Institutes at University of Nevada, Reno. Herb has also enjoyed serving as co-coordinator of the Geographic Alliance in Nevada from 1997 to 2019, working closely with the National Geographic Society Education foundation to provide professional development for K-12 teachers throughout Nevada. He considers himself a life-long student first and a teacher second.
Herb has traveled extensively, and describes himself as a Geo-Evangelist: a person dedicated to increasing the geographic literacy of everyone he encounters. He credits his first Semester at Sea voyage as putting him on this path and continuing to be an inspiration and source of joy.
