SPCM 434 Intercultural Communication

Overview of Course

In this course students will study cultural influences on communication between people of different nations, communication rules/norms in specific cultures, and cultural adaptation, with particular emphasis on the way food shapes culture and cultural identity. This upper division communication course offers a comprehensive survey of the concepts and theories associated with contemporary culture and communication. We will emphasize an identity-based and meaning-centered approach to the study of communication between persons of different cultures, drawing from both cultural and individual identity, language, and verbal and nonverbal norms, using cultural practices around food to inspire our conversations and cultural analyses.
