SOC 462 Applied Social Change [CRN 76738]

Overview of Course

Are you ready to make a difference? In this course, we will explore how societies change, why change is needed, and how you can be a part of shaping the future for socially just change. Using an applied sociological lens, we will look at social movements, justice-centered change, and the powerful role of research and practice in building more equitable societies. You will learn how worldviews, policies, and institutions evolve—and what role individuals and communities play in creating purposeful, justice-driven change.
You will experience personal exploration, global learning in action, and applying hands- on research skills. As you travel with Semester at Sea, some of the guiding areas of inquiry include: 1) Reflecting on your own journey with social change: What inspires you to create change, and how does your background shape your perspective? 2) connecting with social change movements around the world, examining how power, privilege, and justice intersect across cultures, political systems, and economies. 3) Learning practical research methods that empower you to examine issues critically and support meaningful change. You’ll explore real examples of social change in countries along the itinerary, considering questions like: What sparked these movements? What unique challenges did they face? And how might these lessons apply elsewhere?
By the end of the course, you’ll have gained a unique perspective on social change at the personal, local, and global levels. Join us to uncover what’s possible when research, reflection, and action come together to make a difference!
