Overview of Course
How is the nature of war and conflict changing and what are the contemporary challenges to national and international security? This course is an in-depth examination of the evolving field of international security. We will explore the major concepts and theories of international security, drawing on empirical cases from around the globe and especially major regions on our itinerary. The course will examine the changing nature of security threats as well as how states and other actors seek to respond to or manage such threats. The course will engage both theoretical and policy issues and will consider both historical and contemporary cases. Specific issues covered include the causes and changing nature of war, the effect of nuclear weapons on international politics, terrorism and insurgencies, alliances and collective security, the role of technology, humanitarian intervention and human security, and emerging transnational threats and challenges, including climate change, cybersecurity, and global pandemics.
