IU 172C New Student Seminar
Overview of Course
Designed for students new to college learning, this course provides academic, social, and cultural support throughout their journey with Semester at Sea. Anchored in the theme of global citizenship, the course offers students the opportunity to better understand their place in a diverse and interconnected world and to develop some of the skills and perspectives needed to navigate its complexity. Readings and multimedia materials will draw from a variety of disciplines and global perspectives, offering insights into the historical, cultural, and ethical dimensions of global challenges like migration, sustainability, and human rights. Through journals, class discussions, and creative projects, students will hone their critical thinking and communication skills, while clarifying their own educational and professional aspirations. A comparative experiential project will offer students the opportunity to synthesize knowledge gained through their academic work as well as through their experiences in port cities. Students will leave the course prepared to engage thoughtfully and meaningfully with diverse ideas and people throughout their academic and personal lives.
