IE 471 Children and Youth in Global Context

Overview of Course

Countries and communities across the globe have made significant improvements in life outcomes for children and youth in the past decades. However, millions of children and youth around the world experience substantial life hardships due to limited education, poverty, societal conflict, and technology. IE 471 explores issues affecting child and youth life outcomes by examining factors that shape health and well-being from infancy through adolescence. Students will explore factors contributing to children and youth resiliency and wellbeing (i.e., children’s right to play, developmentally appropriate education, and health factors) and factors associated with affliction (i.e., trauma, conflict, and social determinants of health). Students will interact with children and youth from diverse cultures throughout their field experiences and connect these interactions to course content through critical reflection and comparative analysis.
