BUS 220 Ethics in Contemporary Organizations [CRN 72116 and 72117]

Overview of Course

Organizational leaders are confronted with competitive and complex challenges and can feel pressure to do whatever it takes to make a profit, succeed and win. Organizations must consider the impact of their actions on customers, employees, shareholders and communities. There are risks and opportunities associated with organizational conduct.
This course examines the ethical challenges and responsibilities that business leaders face in an increasingly interconnected and culturally diverse world. Students will explore foundational ethical theories, stakeholder perspectives, and real-world dilemmas involving corporate social responsibility, environmental sustainability, labor practices, employee rights and global trade.
Using the unique global learning environment of Semester at Sea, students will engage with local contexts and case studies across multiple countries, critically reflecting on how culture, regulation, and values shape ethical decision-making. Through discussion, experiential learning, and analysis of current events, students will form their own views, give voice to their values and build frameworks for acting with integrity and purpose as professionals in their organizations.
